Chapter 21 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for a grueling forty-eight hours. The tension in the courthouse hallways was unbearable, thick with the frantic speculation of legal analysts and ravenous reporters. Evie sat in a private waiting room with Detective Thorne and Prosecutor Jenkins, refusing to watch the endless news coverage playing on the small television in the corner.

When the bailiff finally knocked on the door, announcing that the jury had reached a verdict, the air in the room felt entirely depleted of oxygen.

Evie walked back into the courtroom, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She took her seat behind the prosecution table. Across the aisle, Richard Vance looked noticeably paler, the arrogant facade finally beginning to crack under the immense weight of his impending fate.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" the judge asked, peering over his glasses at the foreperson.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson, a stern-looking woman in a gray cardigan, replied clearly.

The bailiff retrieved the verdict form and handed it to the judge. The silence in the room was absolute, heavy, and terrifying. The judge reviewed the paper, his expression entirely unreadable, before handing it back to the foreperson to read aloud.

"In the matter of the State versus Richard Vance," the foreperson began, her voice echoing sharply across the cavernous room. "On the charge of Arson in the First Degree, we find the defendant... Guilty."

A low murmur rippled through the gallery, but it was quickly silenced by the sharp crack of the judge's gavel.

"On the charge of Conspiracy to Commit Murder," the foreperson continued. "We find the defendant... Guilty."

Richard collapsed back into his heavy wooden chair as if the strings holding him up had suddenly been cut. His expensive lawyer placed a consoling hand on his shoulder, but Richard simply stared blankly at the polished mahogany table, his entire world evaporating in an instant.

"And on the charge of Attempted Murder in the First Degree," the foreperson read the final, devastating blow. "We find the defendant... Guilty."

Pandemonium erupted in the courtroom. Reporters scrambled for the doors, cameras flashed frantically, and the gallery buzzed with explosive energy. The judge hammered his gavel relentlessly, ordering silence, but the chaos was uncontrollable.

Two heavily armed bailiffs immediately moved to the defense table, grabbing Richard Vance by the arms and forcing him to stand. The sharp, heavy click of steel handcuffs echoed once again, mirroring the night in the hospital corridor, but this time, it was permanent.

Evie sat perfectly still, watching her father being dragged away in chains. She didn't feel triumphant. She didn't feel vindicated. She just felt an overwhelming, profound sense of exhaustion. The war was finally over. The monsters were locked in their cages.
