Chapter 2: The Alibi Crumbling

The ruins of the Vance estate were still smoldering when the forensics team arrived. Detective Thorne and a small tactical unit stood before the blackened frame of the house. The basement was the only part of the structure that had held its integrity—because it wasn't a basement. It was a reinforced panic room, turned into something else entirely.

Evie stood near the edge of the police tape, watching them clear the debris. She knew what was down there. She had stumbled upon it by accident a week before the fire—rows of server racks, stacks of untraceable cash, and, most disturbingly, files labeled with the names of local politicians and judges.

"It’s not a hobby room, is it?" Thorne asked, walking up behind her.

"It’s a clearinghouse," Evie whispered. "My parents weren't just wealthy. They were the ones holding the strings for half the city. If they went down, everyone went down with them. That’s why they tried to kill me. I was the only one who had the security code."

As the agents pried open the heavy steel door of the basement, a sound emerged—not a fire, but the hum of high-powered data processors. They hadn't just been hiding money; they had been operating a massive digital blackmail ring. The fire hadn't been an accident to kill a rebellious daughter; it was an attempt to incinerate a server that contained enough evidence to topple half the state government.
