Chapter 18 - The Siren's Song

The chaotic firefight in the ruins was deafening, the sharp cracks of Thorne’s pistol desperately answering the heavy, booming blasts of the Vanguard shotguns. Evie huddled behind the shattered marble fountain, clutching the heavy titanium black box to her chest, listening to her uncle’s ragged, pained breathing.
"We can't hold them off forever," Arthur grunted, pressing a soot-stained hand tightly against his bleeding side. "Elias is pinned down in the library. Once he has to reload, they will flank him."
Evie looked around the desolate, destroyed courtyard. The Vanguard operatives were professional, calculating, and ruthless. But they had one massive vulnerability: they were operating loudly in a highly affluent, closely monitored suburban neighborhood. The gunshots were inevitably going to attract attention.
"We don't have to kill them," Evie realized, her mind racing with a sudden, desperate strategy. "We just have to stall them long enough for the tactical backup to arrive."
She pulled the encrypted emergency radio from her pocket—the one Thorne had given her at the safe house. It was still set to the police emergency frequency. She slammed her thumb on the transmission button.
"Officer down! Officer down at the Vance Estate!" Evie screamed into the radio, projecting sheer, absolute terror. "Detective Thorne is under heavy automatic fire from Vanguard operatives! We need immediate SWAT backup! They are advancing!"
Almost instantly, the radio crackled with the frantic, overlapping voices of police dispatchers coordinating a massive, city-wide response.
The lead Vanguard operative, pinned behind a charred support beam, clearly heard the loud radio transmission echoing across the courtyard. The realization that an entire army of heavily armed police officers was currently bearing down on their location broke their tactical resolve.
"Fall back!" the lead operative roared to his men, knowing that getting caught in a prolonged siege with the SWAT team was a death sentence. "Abort the objective! Move to the extraction point!"
The gunfire abruptly ceased. Evie cautiously peeked over the marble fountain. The three operatives were sprinting away from the library, disappearing into the dense, unburned woods at the edge of the estate.
A heavy silence fell over the ruins, broken only by the distant, rapidly approaching wail of dozens of police sirens.
Thorne emerged from the smoky library, his face smeared with ash and sweat, his weapon still drawn. He limped slightly, having taken a ricochet to his thigh, but he offered Evie a triumphant, exhausted smile.

"Brilliant tactical move, kid," Thorne praised, walking over to check on Arthur’s wound. "You just saved our lives."
Evie looked down at the heavy orange box in her lap. The cartel was gone. The evidence was secure. The reign of Richard and Claire Vance was finally, unequivocally over.
