Chapter 25 - Ashes to Embers

Evie didn't write a response. Men like Richard Vance thrived on engagement, on conflict, on the narcissistic belief that their words still held weight in the world. The greatest punishment she could inflict upon him was absolute, permanent silence.

She picked up the letter and walked over to the small, decorative stone fireplace in the corner of her office. She didn't need the warmth, but she needed the symbolism.

She struck a long wooden match against the brick hearth. The sulfur flared instantly, a bright, beautiful, terrifying yellow flame.

Evie held the corner of Richard’s desperate letter over the flame. The cheap prison paper caught instantly, curling and blackening as the fire rapidly consumed the frantic, manipulative words. She held it until the heat licked the tips of her fingers, then dropped the burning mass onto the stone grate.

She stood there, watching the flames reduce her father’s final attempt at control into a pathetic, crumbling pile of gray ash.

It was a beautiful, poetic finality. The fire that Richard had intended to use to destroy her had ultimately forged her into an unbreakable force of nature. He was rotting in a concrete cage, and she was standing in the sunlight, leading a multi-million-dollar empire dedicated to destroying men exactly like him.

The intercom on her desk buzzed softly.

"Ms. Vance," her receptionist's cheerful voice echoed through the speaker. "The convoy has successfully arrived at the mountain safe house. All the clients are secure, and the legal team is ready for your opening briefing."

"Thank you, Sarah," Evie replied, pressing the intercom button. "Tell them I’ll be right down."

Evie turned away from the fireplace, leaving the ashes behind. She walked over to the large bay window, looking down at the bustling, vibrant city streets below.

She traced the faint, silvery burn scar on her forearm—a permanent reminder of the night she had died, and the morning she had been reborn. She was Evelyn Eleanor Vance. She had walked through the fire, she had shattered the locks, and she had claimed her ultimate revenge by choosing to live a brilliant, unstoppable life.

She adjusted the collar of her sharp navy blazer, took a deep, clear breath of the air, and walked out of the office to go change the world.
