Chapter 7 - The Gala Sabotage

|

The uneasy truce lasted exactly four days before the house was thrown into absolute chaos.

Richard and Elaine were hosting the annual Caldwell Infrastructure charity gala on the estate grounds. Three hundred of the wealthiest investors, politicians, and socialites in Texas were attending. The massive outdoor pavilion was draped in white silk, and the industrial kitchen was a frantic warzone of chefs and catering staff.

Nora was assigned to manage the front-of-house logistics, ensuring the serving staff moved seamlessly between the kitchen and the guests.

Everything was running flawlessly until 8:00 PM.

The head caterer burst into the butler’s pantry, his face pale with sheer panic.

“We have a disaster,” he gasped, grabbing Margaret’s arm. “The refrigeration truck outside blew a fuse two hours ago. The entire reserve of the main course—the imported sea bass—is completely spoiled. We have nothing to serve the VIP tables in twenty minutes!”

Margaret swayed, looking like she might faint. If they failed to serve the main course at Richard Caldwell’s gala, heads would roll.

Madison, who had walked into the pantry to demand a fresh glass of champagne, overheard the exchange. She looked at Nora, a dark, calculating smirk spreading across her face.

“Well, Nora,” Madison sneered loudly. “You’re in charge of logistics tonight. Looks like you completely failed to monitor the external power grids. My father is going to be furious with you.”

She was setting Nora up to take the fall for the catering company’s mistake.

Nora didn't panic. She didn't argue. She looked at the head caterer.

“What do we have in the secondary freezers inside the house?” Nora demanded sharply, her diner-waitress instincts kicking into high gear.

“Just... just the chicken breast prepped for the staff meals tomorrow,” the caterer stammered.

“Pull it all,” Nora ordered, grabbing an apron. “Slice it thin. We’re doing a pan-seared chicken piccata with a lemon caper reduction. It cooks in four minutes. Get every pan on the industrial burners right now.”

“We can't serve chicken to billionaires!” Madison protested, horrified.

“They won't care what they’re eating if we sell the presentation,” Nora shot back, pushing past Madison. “Now move out of the way, or grab a pan and help.”

For the next twenty minutes, Nora transformed the kitchen into a militaristic assembly line. She directed the chefs, plated the food with immaculate precision, and personally marched the servers out the door.

The crisis was averted. The VIPs praised the "rustic, intimate" menu change.

Madison watched from the doorway, completely stunned. Nora hadn't just survived the sabotage; she had commanded the room with more authority than Madison had ever managed in her entire life.
