Chapter 19 - The Acceptance Letter

|
The following spring arrived in Texas with a burst of brilliant bluebonnets and suffocating humidity.
Nora sat at the grand kitchen island of the Caldwell estate, her nursing textbooks spread out before her. She was exhausted, having spent the last twelve hours running clinical rotations at the local county hospital, but the exhaustion was entirely fulfilling. She was finally doing the work she was born to do.
Elaine walked into the kitchen, leaning slightly on a silver-tipped cane, her color vibrant and healthy.
“You’re working too hard, Nora,” Elaine scolded gently, pouring herself a cup of tea. “Richard said you barely slept last night.”
“I have my final pharmacology exam tomorrow, Mrs. Caldwell,” Nora smiled, rubbing her tired eyes. “If I pass this, I officially graduate with honors next month.”
“You will pass,” Elaine said confidently, sitting across from her. “You have a spine of steel. We all know that.”
The heavy front doors of the mansion opened, and Madison strode into the foyer, holding a thick stack of mail. She looked radiant, deeply fulfilled by her new role at the company, completely shedding the toxic misery that used to define her.
“Mail call!” Madison announced, walking into the kitchen and dropping the stack onto the marble island. She sorted through the envelopes, tossing catalogs and bills aside.
She stopped, holding a thick, official-looking envelope.
“Nora,” Madison smiled, a huge, genuine expression of joy lighting up her face. “It’s from the Texas State Board of Nursing.”
Nora’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly reached out and took the envelope. Her hands were shaking violently as she tore the seal open and pulled out the crisp, heavy paper.
She read the first line, and tears instantly spilled over her lashes, landing softly on the desk.
Dear Nora Hayes, We are pleased to inform you that you have successfully passed the NCLEX-RN examination...
“I passed,” Nora choked out, covering her mouth with her hand. “I’m a registered nurse.”
Madison squealed, launching herself across the island to hug Nora fiercely. Elaine clapped her hands in delight, wiping her own tears of joy.
“We are throwing the biggest graduation party Dallas has ever seen!” Madison declared, grabbing her phone to start planning immediately. “I’m calling the caterers right now!”
Nora laughed, a deep, unburdened sound of absolute triumph. She had done it. She had clawed her way out of poverty, survived the cruelty of the mansion, and achieved her impossible dream.
