Chapter 14 - The Corporate Threat

|

The silence in the hallway was thick and terrifying.

Arthur stared at Nora, his hand hovering over the flash drive. He didn't look panicked; he looked entirely, dangerously calm. He slowly pulled the drive from the computer, slipped it into his pocket, and walked toward the door, pulling it wide open.

“Nora,” Arthur said smoothly, his voice betraying absolutely no guilt. “What are you doing creeping around Mr. Caldwell’s office?”

“I could ask you the same thing,” Nora replied, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the adrenaline spiking in her veins. “Mr. Caldwell is at the office. You have no business on his private computer.”

Arthur offered a cold, patronizing smile. “I am the head of security, Nora. I was running a routine diagnostic check on the network firewalls. It’s highly technical. I wouldn't expect a maid playing nurse to understand.”

“I understand what a flash drive looks like,” Nora countered, refusing to back down.

Arthur’s smile vanished. He took a slow, menacing step forward, using his massive physical frame to intimidate her.

“You are out of your depth, little girl,” Arthur whispered, his voice dropping into a lethal register. “If you say one word about this to Richard, I will ensure that evidence is found in your room proving you have been stealing Mrs. Caldwell’s jewelry. Who do you think they will believe? The decorated security chief, or the desperate girl from Arkansas trying to pay for school?”

He didn't wait for her response. He pushed past her, walking casually down the hallway, leaving Nora standing alone with a terrifying realization.

Arthur wasn't just stealing files; he was orchestrating a massive corporate betrayal, likely selling Richard’s confidential merger data to a rival firm.

Nora knew she couldn't go to Richard without proof. Arthur controlled the security cameras; he could easily delete the footage of himself in the office. She needed an ally. She needed someone who had the power to access the house’s systems without raising Arthur’s suspicion.

Nora walked directly upstairs to the media room.

Madison was sitting on the sofa, reviewing her business pitch on a laptop. She looked up as Nora entered and immediately saw the pale, urgent look on her friend’s face.

“Nora? What’s wrong?” Madison asked, setting the laptop aside.

“I need your help,” Nora said, closing the heavy doors behind her. “And I need you to trust me completely. Arthur is stealing from your father, and he just threatened to frame me if I expose him.”

Madison didn't hesitate. She didn't question Nora’s word. The spoiled girl who would have thrown Nora under the bus a month ago stood up, her eyes blazing with absolute, fierce loyalty.

“What do we need to do?” Madison asked.
