Chapter 13 - A Shift in Power

|

Elaine’s recovery radically altered the ecosystem of the Caldwell estate.

When Elaine finally returned home weeks later, she required around-the-clock care, strict medication management, and physical therapy. Richard had interviewed a dozen elite private nurses, but Elaine had refused them all.

She wanted Nora.

“I trust her, Richard,” Elaine had whispered from her bed. “She didn't let me die on those stairs. I want her.”

So, Nora’s title officially changed. She was no longer a housekeeper. She became Elaine’s private medical aide, transitioning from the shadows of the utility rooms directly into the inner sanctum of the family.

The dynamic between Nora and Madison also evolved into something entirely unrecognizable. The toxic, hierarchical barrier was obliterated. They spent their afternoons sitting in the sunroom while Elaine slept, drinking coffee and talking like genuine friends.

“I sent the revised business proposal back to my father,” Madison admitted one afternoon, nervously twisting her coffee mug. “I took your advice. I removed the emotional appeals and focused entirely on the data and the profit margins for the sustainable fashion line.”

“And?” Nora asked, smiling over her cup.

“He read it,” Madison beamed, a radiant, genuine expression of pride. “He actually read it. He said the supply chain logistics still need work, but he agreed to let me present it to the board next month.”

“That’s amazing, Madison,” Nora praised her.

“It’s because of you,” Madison said quietly, her eyes turning serious. “You showed me that I don't have to scream to be heard. I just have to be undeniable.”

Nora felt a profound warmth in her chest. She was watching a broken, spoiled girl transform into a formidable, grounded woman.

But their newfound peace was about to be violently interrupted.

As Nora walked down the hallway to retrieve Elaine’s afternoon medication, she noticed the door to Richard’s home office was slightly ajar.

She wouldn't have thought twice about it, except Richard was currently downtown at the corporate headquarters, and the house manager, Margaret, was out running errands.

Nora crept closer, her instincts flaring. She peered through the crack in the door.

Standing behind Richard’s desk, frantically downloading files from the billionaire’s private, unsecured desktop computer onto a flash drive, was Arthur, the head of the estate’s security team.

Nora held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs. Arthur was stealing corporate data. And before she could step back into the shadows, the floorboard beneath her foot let out a loud, agonizing creak.

Arthur’s head snapped up, his eyes locking directly onto Nora through the gap in the door.
