Chapter 17 - The Trap Springs

The aftermath of Arthur’s arrest was swift and brutal.
Richard Caldwell arrived at the estate with a team of corporate lawyers and local police detectives. They reviewed the hidden server footage, completely validating Nora’s story and exposing Arthur’s massive corporate espionage ring. He had been planning to sell Caldwell Infrastructure’s confidential merger blueprints to a rival firm in Chicago for millions.
Richard sat behind his desk in the study, watching the police escort a handcuffed Arthur out of the house. He looked exhausted, the betrayal of his most trusted employee weighing heavily on his shoulders.
He turned his gaze to the two women sitting on the leather sofa opposite his desk.
Madison and Nora sat shoulder-to-shoulder, looking incredibly disheveled but entirely victorious.
“You two,” Richard began, his voice thick with a mixture of disbelief and profound pride, “took down a trained corporate spy with a marble lamp and a laptop.”
“Nora swung the lamp, Dad,” Madison grinned, bumping her shoulder against Nora’s. “I just ran really fast.”
Richard let out a breathless, exhausted laugh. He looked at his daughter, truly seeing her for the first time in years. She wasn't the spoiled, screaming child who broke vases to get attention. She had risked her own life to protect an employee and secure her family’s legacy. She had finally grown up.
Then, Richard looked at Nora.
“You have saved my wife’s life, and now you have saved my company,” Richard said, his tone turning incredibly serious. “I told you once that I owed you a debt I could never repay. I was wrong. I can repay it.”
He opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a thick, legal document, sliding it across the polished wood toward Nora.
“What is this?” Nora asked, standing up and approaching the desk.
“It is a full, unconditional scholarship to the Baylor University College of Nursing, entirely funded by the Caldwell Foundation,” Richard stated smoothly. “In addition, it includes a guaranteed, six-figure starting position as the Director of Corporate Health and Wellness for Caldwell Infrastructure Holdings upon your graduation.”
Nora stared at the paperwork, her vision instantly blurring with tears. The dream that had felt entirely impossible, the dream she had scrubbed floors and endured abuse to inch toward, was sitting right in front of her.

“Mr. Caldwell, I… I can't accept this,” Nora wept, shaking her head. “It’s too much.”
“It’s not enough,” Madison interjected, standing up and walking over to hug Nora fiercely. “Sign the paper, Nora. You earned every single penny of it.”
