Chapter 40 - The Open Door

|
The Grand Council Chamber beneath Zurich was a cathedral of black marble, illuminated by golden chandeliers.
Twelve powerful figures sat around an enormous circular table—the rulers of the global shadow empire. At the head of the table sat Victoria Carter, looking radiant and victorious in her white suit.
The heavy iron doors swung open with a loud, echoey slam.
Ethan and I walked into the chamber together. Ethan wore a flawless charcoal suit, looking every bit the Sovereign, while I walked beside him in a simple black dress, holding the master encrypted drive in my fist.
Lucas and Lena marched behind us, carrying heavy briefcase terminals containing our global broadcast uplink.
Victoria smiled warmly from her seat. "Welcome, my son. The Council is ready for your coronation."
Ethan stopped at the edge of the circular table. He didn't bow. He didn't sit down.
"There will be no coronation, Victoria," Ethan announced, his voice echoing off the black marble walls like thunder.
Victoria's smile faded slightly. "Ethan... do not play games in front of the Council."
Ethan gestured to Lucas. Lucas slammed the briefcase terminal onto the table, pressing a single red key.
Instantly, the massive holographic screens above the Council table flashed to life, displaying live, real-time banking feeds showing billions of dollars spilling out of the High Council's Swiss accounts, flowing directly into international humanitarian trusts and federal law enforcement freeze-accounts worldwide!
The twelve Council members erupted into shocked, frantic screams, scrambling for their phones!
"What have you done?!" Victoria shrieked, standing up, her composure completely shattering! "You ruined us!"
"I didn't ruin you, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice cold, calm, and absolute. "I liberated us. The Carter empire ends today."
Federal tactical agents in Swiss and American uniforms burst through the side doors, weapons drawn, shouting commands as the Council members were pinned to the floor in handcuffs!
Victoria stared at Ethan in absolute horror as two officers grabbed her arms, pinning her against the marble table. "You're a monster, Ethan! You destroyed your own family!"
"No," Ethan said softly, taking my hand and locking his fingers with mine. "I saved my family."
We walked out of the Council chamber together, stepping past the falling empire, out into the blinding white light of the Swiss morning.
We stepped onto the private airstrip where our jet was waiting to take us home to New York. The air was fresh, clean, and full of infinite promise.
As we reached the steps of the plane, my phone vibrated in my coat pocket.
An unknown number.
I pulled it out and looked at the glowing screen.
A single text message had just arrived from an untraceable international satellite:
The Council was only one branch of the tree, Ava. The roots run much deeper than Ethan knows. Welcome to the real game.
I looked up at Ethan, my breath catching in my throat as the morning wind whipped my hair across my face.

Ethan saw the look in my eyes. He looked down at the phone, then turned his dark grey eyes back to mine. He didn't look afraid. He smiled—a cold, fierce, confident smile—and took my hand tighter.
"Let them come," Ethan whispered softly into the wind, pulling me close as the jet engine roared to life, leaving the door to our endless future wide open against the boundless sky.
