Chapter 39 - Blood and Bonds

|

Midnight approached like a ticking time bomb inside the luxurious guest wing of the Swiss fortress.

Ethan stood by the arched stone window, staring out at the snow falling heavily over the dark mountainside. His reflection in the glass showed a man torn between two worlds—the legitimate life he had built with me, and the dark, inescapable gravity of his bloodline.

I walked up behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist, resting my cheek against his back.

"We can fight them, Ethan," I whispered softly. "Lucas and Lena are outside the perimeter. We can escape."

Ethan turned around in my arms, holding me tight, his face etched with profound, painful exhaustion. "If we run, Ava, she will hunt us for the rest of our lives. She controls judges, intelligence agencies, and armies. You will never be free."

"I don't care about running, Ethan," I said, looking into his dark grey eyes. "I care about you. I won't let her turn you into a monster."

Ethan leaned down, kissing me with a fierce, desperate passion that felt like a goodbye. He held my face in his hands, his thumbs caressing my cheeks.

"She thinks she broke me twenty years ago," Ethan whispered, a dark, brilliant spark igniting in his eyes. "She thinks I'm going to take that throne as her puppet."

"Ethan... what are you planning?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat.

"She wanted to test if I was strong enough to lead the Syndicate," Ethan murmured, a lethal, regal smile spreading across his sharp face. "Tomorrow morning in Zurich... I'm going to take her throne. But I'm not merging the empire, Ava."

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to burn it to the ground from the inside," Ethan swore softly. "And I'm going to give every dollar of their stolen fortune to the world."

He pulled an encrypted flash drive from his pocket—the master drive containing my neural software and the complete banking records of the High Council.

"Are you with me, Dr. Vance?" Ethan asked, holding out his hand to me.

I looked at the man who had pulled me out of the dark, the man who was ready to wage war against his own blood to protect our future.

I took his hand. "To the end, Ethan."
