Chapter 36 - The Geneva Board

|
The private jet cut through the night sky toward Geneva, Switzerland.
The honeymoon romance had vanished, replaced by an atmosphere of cold, deadly focus. Ethan sat at the leather conference desk, reviewing military intelligence reports, medical records from twenty years ago, and financial trails that spanned four continents.
I sat beside him, holding his hand tightly, offering him the same silent strength he had given me when my world was falling apart.
"Everything was a lie," Ethan whispered, staring blankly at a childhood photo of his parents sitting on his laptop screen. "My father's death, my mother's illness, Elizabeth's trial... it was all a staged theatrical performance to test me."
"To test you?" I asked gently. "For what?"
"To see if I was strong enough to inherit the Syndicate," Ethan answered, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "The Carter name wasn't just a business empire, Ava. It was the public front for the Syndicate—a global shadow organization controlling energy, technology, and governments across three continents."
"And your parents?"
"They faked their deaths to escape federal investigations twenty years ago," Ethan explained, turning to look at me, his eyes filled with dark clarity. "They passed the torch to Elizabeth Bennett to run the American wing while they built the European infrastructure in Geneva. Elizabeth failed because she got greedy with Senator Collins... and now my mother is stepping out of the shadows to reclaim total control."
"And Andrew?" I realized with a gasp. "Andrew wasn't acting alone! He was working for your mother!"
"Andrew was just a pawn she used to test my resolve," Ethan said, a cold, lethal fire igniting in his grey eyes. "She wanted to see if I would burn down the empire to protect you."
May you like
"And you did," I whispered.
"And I would do it again," Ethan swore, kissing my knuckles. "Now, we go to Geneva. We meet the woman who raised me... and we break her shadow empire forever."
