Chapter 17 - Return to Carter Estate

|

With a blindingly fast motion, Ethan threw the tiny silver key into the high, vaulted darkness of the church loft!

"Grab it!" Andrew roared, pointing his gun at the shadows above.

In the chaos that followed, Lena opened fire, taking down two of Collins’s guards instantly. Ethan grabbed my wrist, yanked me through the side door behind the altar, and slammed the heavy iron bolt shut behind us.

We burst out into the alley where a sleek, armored sedan was waiting with its engine roaring.

Lucas Carter was behind the wheel.

"Get in!" Lucas screamed, leaning across the passenger seat to push the door open.

We dove into the backseat just as bullets began slamming against the vehicle's reinforced bulletproof glass. Lucas slammed his foot on the accelerator, tearing out of the alley and onto the rain-slicked streets of Brooklyn.

"I thought you were working for Collins!" I yelled over the roar of the engine.

Lucas wiped blood from his lip, looking at us in the rearview mirror. "Collins lied to me! He told me Ethan was the one who kept me in Switzerland! I just found out my father died trying to set up a trust fund to buy my freedom!"

Ethan looked at his twin brother in the mirror. For twenty-four years, a wall of lies had kept them apart. But in that split second, the unspoken bond between identical twins clicked back into place.

"Where are we going?" Ethan asked.

"Carter Estate in the Hudson Valley," Lucas replied grimly. "The original master ledger isn't in a safe, Ethan. Our father didn't hide it in a box. He hid it inside the server core built beneath the family mansion."
