Chapter 1 - The Wrong Door

|
At exactly 7:14 p.m., the heavy brass handle of the dressing room suite turned.
I stood frozen in front of the ornate vanity mirror, my stained silk blouse draped open over my shoulders. In my left hand, I clutched a fresh black blouse against my ribs, trying desperately to cover what should have remained hidden forever.
I never expected Ethan Carter to walk into that room.
He was supposed to be in the executive penthouse on the top floor of Carter Tower, finalizing his opening remarks for the annual Children’s Heart Hospital gala. Instead, he stepped through the door, his tall frame cutting through the soft ambient lighting of the private suite.
"I’m sorry," Ethan said softly, his voice low and smooth. "Someone in the event office told me my spare cufflinks were left in here."
He stopped mid-sentence.
He wasn't staring because I was changing.
He was staring at my skin.
In the bright, unyielding glare of the vanity light bulbs, my body told a horrific story I had spent four agonizing months lying about. Dark purple fingerprints circled the pale flesh of my right upper arm, distinctly shaped like a man’s hand squeezing until capillaries burst. A deep, angry indigo bruise spread across my lower ribs, while fading yellow and greenish marks near my collarbone revealed older injuries that had barely healed before fresh ones replaced them.
For one unbearable, suffocating moment, neither of us breathed.
I wasn't embarrassed by my nakedness. I was paralyzed by absolute, raw terror because the powerful billionaire I had secretly loved for nearly a year had just uncovered my darkest, most dangerous secret.
Downstairs, the grand ballroom was already humming with the voices of three hundred elite guests—senators, CEOs, world-renowned surgeons, journalists, and high-society donors. In less than twenty minutes, Ethan would step onto the stage to announce a fifty-million-dollar expansion for the hospital.
And thirty minutes after that, Dr. Andrew Vaughn—my handsome, celebrated fiancé—would be honored as the city’s miracle surgeon.

Ethan slowly turned his back to me, facing the closed door, his broad shoulders tense beneath his bespoke tuxedo jacket.
"Please," I whispered, my voice shaking as I fumbled with the buttons of my clean blouse. "Please, Mr. Carter... I should have locked the door."
