Chapter 8 - Under the Willow

|
Shaken and furious, Vanessa stormed off to her room. Adrian left the house, needing air.
He walked down toward the estate's private lake, where the sweeping branches of an ancient weeping willow dipped into the clear water. Sitting on a wooden bench under the tree was Maya, reading a dog-eared book on mid-century landscape design.
She looked up as his footsteps approached, smiling warmly. "Rough day in the kitchen?"
Adrian sat down on the opposite end of the bench, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. "You have no idea."
"Want to talk about it?" she asked softly, closing her book. "Or do you just want to sit here and watch the ducks?"
"I think I forgot what real people sound like," Adrian said quietly, looking at her clean, unvarnished face, her honest grey eyes, and the faint specks of dirt on her nose. "Everyone in my world... they always want something. A contract. A check. A position."
Maya tilted her head, watching him closely. "You talk very differently for a cook, Adrian. You sound like a man who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders."
Adrian stiffened slightly, but Maya didn't press. She reached out and placed a gentle, warm hand on his forearm.
"Whoever hurt you in the past," Maya said softly, "they didn't define your worth. And whatever is happening in that big house, remember that nature doesn't care about titles. The trees grow the same for a king as they do for a gardener."
Adrian looked at her hand on his arm. The gesture was completely devoid of trickery or hidden motives. She didn't know he was a billionaire. She thought he was a low-wage cook struggling through a tough job, and yet she offered him pure, unadulterated human comfort.
"Thank you, Maya," he said, his voice surprisingly thick with emotion.
May you like
"Anytime, Chef," she grinned, winking at him. "Now, go back in there and show them what you're made of."
As Adrian walked back up the hill toward the illuminated estate, he realized something terrifying. For the first time in six months, his heart was beating for someone new—and she didn't even know his real name.
