Maya lowered her canvas bag to the ground, looking up at him as the cool night wind whipped her hair across her face.

"When I talked to you under that tree," Adrian said softly, his voice full of an uncharacteristic vulnerability, "you didn't know who I was. You offered me kindness for no reason other than the fact that you thought I was a human being who was having a bad day. Do you have any idea how rare that is in my life?"

Maya looked down at her hands. "Adrian... kindness shouldn't be rare. But our worlds are completely different. Tomorrow, you'll go back to running boardrooms and signing multi-million-dollar deals. I'm going back to my small nursery in the city, digging in the dirt."

Maya stared into his deep dark eyes, seeing the genuine pain and hope held within them.

"I need time, Adrian," she whispered softly, pulling her hands gently back from his grip. "You spent days testing everyone around you. You need to figure out who you are when you aren't hiding behind an apron or a bank account."

A car horn sounded down the road—her ride had arrived.

Maya picked up her bag. She walked toward the car, stopping just before opening the door. She looked back over her shoulder at the powerful billionaire standing alone in the dark.

"Goodbye, Chef," she said with a faint, sad smile, before getting into the car and driving away into the darkness.
