Chapter 14 - The Diamond in the Safe

Silence descended upon the dining room like a heavy anvil.
Vanessa’s glass of water slipped from her hand, shattering against her plate. She stared at Adrian, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
"A-Adrian...?" she stammered, her voice shaking violently. "You... you're Adrian Mercer?"
Adrian slowly unbuttoned his chef’s jacket, slipping it off to reveal a crisp, tailored black dress shirt underneath. He pulled a chair out beside his mother and sat down, crossing his legs casually.
"Good evening, Vanessa," Adrian said, his voice cold, calm, and commanding—the voice of a man who commanded billions. "Or should I say... Miss Hale?"
Vanessa’s mind raced through every interaction of the last five days—throwing the eggs at his feet, calling him incompetent, trying to bribe him with five thousand dollars, accusing him of stealing her watch, demanding he be fired.
"No..." she whimpered, her face completely drained of color. "This... this is a joke. Evelyn, tell me this is a joke!"
Evelyn set her glass down with a firm click. "It is no joke, Vanessa. My son wanted to see who you truly were when you thought nobody important was watching."
"You... you lied to me!" Vanessa shrieked, panic turning into explosive fury as she pointed a trembling finger at Adrian. "You pretended to be a servant! That is sick! That is twisted!"
"Is it?" Adrian asked smoothly. "Was it twisted when you deliberately kicked the table to ruin an antique rug and blame an elderly woman? Was it twisted when you tried to frame me for stealing your watch so you could cover up your family's bankruptcy?"

Vanessa choked on her words. "How... how do you know about that?"
"Because this is my house," Adrian said softly. "Every corner. Every room."
