Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Lauren

The kitchen was quiet at midnight. The heavy stainless-steel appliances gleamed in the dim under-cabinet lighting. Adrian sat at the wooden butcher block, an antique fountain pen in hand, looking over high-level merger documents for Mercer Global Holdings.
He wore simple grey sweatpants and a dark t-shirt—the attire of an off-duty cook living in the staff quarters behind the main mansion.
Teresa walked in, carrying a mug of chamomile tea. She set it beside his laptop. "You should be resting. You spent four hours preparing duck confit for tomorrow's dinner."
"I can't sleep," Adrian admitted, setting the pen down. "Every time I look at Vanessa, I hear Lauren's voice."
Teresa’s expression softened with deep empathy. She remembered Lauren Whitmore all too well. Six months ago, Adrian had been weeks away from marrying her.
"Lauren was different, wasn't she?" Teresa asked quietly. "She was subtle."
"Lauren was a master actor," Adrian corrected, a bitter smile touching his lips. "She didn't throw eggs. She smiled, kissed my cheek, and told me she loved me for who I was. And then I stood outside her guest bedroom and listened to her tell her sister that four years of waiting for the Mercer empire was worth putting up with me."
"That was a wound that hadn't healed," Teresa said.
"It opened my eyes," Adrian replied, closing his laptop. "When I confronted Lauren, I asked her a simple question: 'If I lost everything tomorrow, would you still be here?' She couldn't answer. She got angry instead."
He looked up at the ceiling, toward the third-floor master suite where Vanessa Hale was sleeping on eight-hundred-thread-count sheets.
"My mother is fragile, Teresa. My father's death broke something in her. She desperately wants me to settle down, to have a family. When she met Vanessa at a charity gala, she thought she’d found my salvation. She brought her to our private estate for a week so I could 'get to know her.'"

"And instead of walking down the stairs in a tailored suit," Teresa chuckled softly, "you traded places with Chef Marcus."
"Chef Marcus got a paid month off in Tuscany," Adrian smiled faintly. "And I got the truth. In three days, my mother arrives for the weekend dinner. Vanessa thinks she’s playing a long game. She has no idea the board is already set."
