Chapter 20 - Crossroads of the Heart

|

Two days later.

The morning sun broke over the Mercer oceanfront estate, filling the grand library with warm golden light.

The shattered glass from Vanessa's wine had been cleaned. The legal papers finalizing the bankruptcy acquisition of Hale Development lay neatly stack on the mahogany desk, waiting for Adrian's signature.

Adrian stood upstairs in the master suite, looking at the wall safe behind the velvet painting.

He entered the combination—click.

The heavy steel door swung open. Inside rested a velvet box containing the Mercer family heirloom ring—a flawless twelve-carat canary diamond that had belonged to his grandmother.

Evelyn walked into the room softly, leaning against the doorframe. "Are you going to keep it locked away forever?"

Adrian took the velvet box, feeling its weight in his palm. He snapped it closed.

"I spent so long trying to protect myself from being used," Adrian said quietly, turning to face his mother, "that I almost forgot how to trust someone who was genuine."

"She's a good girl, Adrian," Evelyn said gently. "She returned her final payment check yesterday. She said she only accepts money for work she completed, and she didn't finish the north rose garden."

Adrian looked out the large floor-to-ceiling windows toward the lake and the weeping willow tree in the distance. The bench sat empty in the morning sun.

He slipped the velvet ring box into his pocket, grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair, and started walking toward the door.

"Where are you going?" Evelyn asked, a knowing smile touching her lips.

Adrian paused at the doorway, looking back at his mother with a look of quiet determination.

"I'm going to buy a small plant nursery in the city," Adrian said softly. "And I'm going to ask the owner if she needs a new apprentice who knows how to listen."

He walked down the grand staircase, leaving the quiet luxury of his mansion behind, stepping out into the bright, unpredictable morning air—unaware of whether the girl under the willow tree would ever open her heart to a billionaire who used to be a cook.
