Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage

The Callahan estate was less of a home and more of a fortress disguised as architectural brilliance.
Overlooking Lake Michigan, the massive penthouse spanned the entire top two floors of a high-security tower. When the private elevator doors opened, Ellie, sitting in a wheelchair pushed by Jack himself, was greeted by floor-to-ceiling glass, dark marble, and an army of men in tailored suits trying very hard not to look like armed guards.
“Leo!” Ellie cried out.
Her younger brother came running across the massive living room, stopping short before he could hug her, his eyes wide as he took in the bandages wrapped tightly around her torso.
“El, you look terrible,” Leo said, his voice cracking with relief.
“Thanks, kid,” she smiled weakly, reaching out to squeeze his hand. “You okay? Did they treat you alright?”
“Are you kidding?” Leo whispered, leaning in. “This place is insane. They have a private chef. The guy made me steak for breakfast. And look.” He lifted the hem of his shirt, showing off a sleek, state-of-the-art insulin pump attached to his hip. “I don’t have to do the manual injections anymore.”
Ellie looked up at Jack. The dangerous freight king was standing a few feet away, pretending to check his phone, but she saw the faint, satisfied tension in his jaw. He had kept his word.
“Your room is down the east hall,” Jack said, putting his phone away. “It has a private terrace and an attached suite for Leo. A physical therapist will be here at eight every morning to help with your mobility.”
“You didn’t have to do all this,” Ellie said softly as he pushed her chair toward the hallway.
“I protect what is mine,” Jack replied, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“I’m not yours,” she corrected quietly.

Jack stopped the wheelchair in front of a massive oak door. He leaned down, his face so close she could smell his cologne—cedar and something dark and expensive.
“For the next three months, until the heat dies down, you are my beloved wife. Try to act like it in front of the staff, Ellie. The walls have ears.”
