Chapter 20 - The Unsigned Papers

The Chicago skyline glittered like diamonds through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse.
Ellie stood by the glass, looking out over the city. She wore one of Jack’s oversized henley shirts, holding a warm mug of coffee. Behind her, the massive penthouse was quiet. Liam and Leo were asleep in their rooms, safe and secure.
On the mahogany desk in the study, the manila folder sat completely untouched.
Jack walked up behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist, pulling her back against his solid chest. He rested his chin on the top of her head, completely at peace.
“You didn’t sign the papers,” Jack noted quietly, looking at her reflection in the glass.
“I don’t plan to,” Ellie replied, leaning back into his embrace.
She looked down at her left hand. The massive emerald-cut diamond ring still rested on her ring finger. It had started as a prop, a shield to fool the press and bait a rival syndicate. But now, it felt entirely real. It was a promise, forged in gunpowder and blood.
“My world is dark, Ellie,” Jack whispered, a final, lingering warning. “There will always be another threat. Another war.”
“Then we fight it,” she said simply.
She was no longer the terrified maid bleeding on a ballroom carpet. She had stepped into the shadows alongside Chicago’s most dangerous man, and she found that she didn't mind the dark, as long as he was standing next to her.
Jack turned her in his arms, looking down at her with a fierce, possessive love that would burn down the entire city to keep her safe. He kissed her, slow and deep, sealing a vow that required no paperwork or priests.
