Chapter 3 - The Surgical Floor

|

Northwestern Memorial Hospital had never seen a lockdown like it.

Within twelve minutes of the ambulance’s arrival, heavily armed men in dark suits secured the perimeter, the emergency entrances, and the surgical floor. The hospital administration tried to protest, but when Jack Callahan stood in the lobby covered in blood, waving a blank check and a terrifying glare, the rules completely evaporated.

“She’s in OR three,” a lead trauma surgeon said, approaching Jack carefully. “Dr. Abrams just started. It’s a shattered rib and severe tissue damage. We had to intubate.”

“Is she going to live?” Jack demanded, his voice dangerously quiet.

“We are doing everything we can, Mr. Callahan. But regarding her paperwork… she came in without identification, and you claimed she was your wife.”

Jack didn’t blink. “Yes.”

“Sir, the media is already outside. They’re running stories about a secret marriage. If this is a lie to bypass hospital protocol—”

“Listen to me,” Jack interrupted, taking a step forward until he towered over the physician. “That woman took three hollow-point rounds that were aimed at my six-year-old boy. As far as this hospital, the press, and the city of Chicago are concerned, her name is Ellie Callahan. She has full access to the VIP recovery suite. You will put her on the best pain management available, and you will not let a single person onto this floor without my explicit permission.”

The doctor swallowed hard, nodding slowly. “Understood.”

Jack turned away, walking toward the large observation window that overlooked the surgical bay. His hands were shaking. He, a man who moved millions in freight and destroyed rivals before breakfast, was entirely paralyzed by the sight of a hotel maid bleeding on an operating table.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was his head of security.

“Talk,” Jack barked.

“We secured the boy at the penthouse. Liam is safe, Boss. But we found out who hired the shooter.”

“Good,” Jack’s eyes darkened, the reflection in the glass looking like a demon waking up. “Find out where they breathe. And then burn it down.”
