Chapter 18 - The Dust Settles

|

Two weeks later, the physical scars had begun to fade into white lines, but the emotional shift in the penthouse was permanent.

The media frenzy had completely died down. With the Volkovs eradicated, Jack’s PR machine quietly suppressed the tabloid coverage, replacing the dramatic "secret wife" headlines with boring corporate acquisitions and charity donations.

Ellie no longer woke up expecting gunfire. The heavy security detail was dialed back. Leo was thriving with his new medical care, talking excitedly about applying to a private prep school Jack had quietly funded. Liam had finally started speaking again, his first words a quiet “thank you” whispered into Ellie’s neck.

But as the danger faded, a new, heavy silence settled between Jack and Ellie.

The contract was up. The necessity of their fake marriage was no longer a matter of life and death.

One evening, Ellie walked into Jack’s study. He was sitting at his desk, staring blankly at a thick manila folder. He looked up as she entered, his jaw tightening slightly.

“You’re healing well,” Jack noted, gesturing to her fluid movements.

“Dr. Abrams cleared me this morning,” Ellie said, taking a seat opposite him. She looked at the folder on the desk. “What is that?”

Jack didn’t answer immediately. He picked up his scotch glass, swirling the amber liquid. He looked like a man preparing for a firing squad.

“When you took the bullets for my son, you lost your job. You lost your apartment. I forced you into this life to protect you, but I also turned your reality upside down,” Jack said slowly, his voice completely devoid of its usual arrogant command.

He slid the manila folder across the mahogany desk toward her.

“These are annulment papers,” Jack said, the words clearly tasting like ash in his mouth. “Signed by a judge. The marriage never legally existed on public record, but this clears any private ties. There is also a trust fund set up in your name. Five million dollars. Enough to buy a house in the suburbs, pay for Leo’s college, and never clean a hotel room again.”

Ellie stared at the folder, her heart plummeting.
