Chapter 13 - The Bratva’s Shadow

The illusion of peace at the penthouse was shattered two days later.
Ellie was sitting on the terrace with Liam, reading him a book, when a massive explosion rattled the glass windows of the tower. Plumes of black smoke rose in the distance over the Chicago skyline, coming directly from the industrial harbor.
Jack’s head of security, a massive ex-Marine named Marcus, burst onto the terrace.
“Get inside, Mrs. Callahan. Now.”
Ellie grabbed Liam, rushing into the living room just as Jack emerged from his study. He looked like murder incarnate.
“Report,” Jack barked, strapping a shoulder holster over his chest.
“It was Warehouse Four, boss. The Volkovs hit it with C4. They timed it during the shift change. We lost three men.” Marcus looked grim. “They left a message spray-painted on the remaining wall. It said 'Debts are collected in blood.'”
Jack’s jaw locked. He looked at Ellie, who was holding Liam tightly against her chest, her eyes wide with terror.
“Lock the tower down,” Jack ordered Marcus. “No one gets in or out. If a shadow moves in the lobby, you shoot it.”
“Where are you going?” Ellie asked, her voice trembling as Jack checked the magazine of his sidearm.
“I’m going to end this.”
“Jack, wait.” Ellie stepped forward, putting a hand on his chest. His heart was hammering against her palm, a steady, furious war drum. “Viktor wants you angry. He wants you to make a mistake. If you go rushing in there—”
“They killed my men, Ellie,” Jack interrupted, his eyes burning with a dark, violent fire. “They tried to kill my son. And they put a bullet in you. There is no strategy left. Only a reckoning.”

He grabbed the back of her neck, pulling her in and pressing a hard, desperate kiss to her forehead.
“Keep Liam safe,” he whispered. And then, the king of Chicago walked out the door, leaving Ellie entirely alone in the golden cage.
