Chapter 9 - The Financial Ghost

|
The safe house was a massive, isolated cabin hidden deep in the Catskill Mountains, surrounded by dense pine forests and heavily monitored by closed-circuit cameras. It felt less like a sanctuary and more like a high-end prison.
For two days, Sophia paced the hardwood floors like a caged tiger. Marcus was a silent, immovable presence, standing guard by the doors, sleeping in shifts on the living room sofa with a tactical rifle resting across his chest.
Sophia didn't waste her time panicking. She set up her laptop on the heavy oak dining table and went to work.
She had access to the legitimate front companies Adrian used for his art logistics. But now, she wasn't just looking at the manifests; she was actively tracing the money. She used her deep knowledge of forensic accounting to follow the shell companies backward.
On the third night, while Marcus was brewing coffee in the kitchen, Sophia cracked a major encryption firewall on a routing server.
Her breath caught in her throat.
The Venetian art collection Adrian had imported two years ago wasn't just a front for money laundering. The shipping crates had possessed false bottoms. According to the decrypted weight discrepancies and internal customs payoffs, Adrian had used her company to import high-grade, untraceable weaponry.
But that wasn't the explosive part.
The weapons weren't for the Moretti family. The routing numbers proved Adrian had sold the shipment directly to a cartel operating out of Miami, effectively bypassing the Russo family’s absolute control over the eastern seaboard ports.
Adrian hadn't just cheated on Valentina. He had betrayed the Russo family’s business empire, stealing millions in illicit trade right under their noses.
“What are you looking at?” Marcus’s voice startled her.
He was standing right behind her chair, holding two mugs of black coffee. His dark eyes flicked to the laptop screen, recognizing the complex financial routing codes.
Sophia quickly closed the laptop, but it was too late.
“I’m looking at the reason Dante Russo actually wants me dead,” Sophia said, turning around in her chair to face the massive security chief. “It’s not because I’m Adrian’s mistress, Marcus. It’s because I hold the keys to the shell companies Adrian used to bypass the Russo ports.”
Marcus slowly set the coffee mugs down on the table. His expression was entirely unreadable.
“Dante thinks you’re an accomplice,” Marcus murmured, the pieces finally falling into place for him as well. “He thinks you orchestrated the weapon smuggling with Adrian.”
“I didn't know,” Sophia whispered, the betrayal burning fresh in her chest. “He used my company, Marcus. He used me.”
Marcus looked down at her, a flicker of genuine sympathy crossing his scarred face. “Adrian is a boss, Sophia. He uses everyone.”
“I need you to get a message to Valentina,” Sophia demanded, her voice turning to steel.

“I can't do that. My orders are to keep you isolated.”
“If you don't,” Sophia countered, standing up, “Dante will eventually find this cabin. And when he does, he won't just kill me. He’ll kill you, too. Valentina is the only one who wants to stop a war. Let me talk to her.”
