Chapter 18 - The Monster Revealed

|
Adrian stared at her, the brilliant, tactical reality of her move washing over him. She hadn't sold him out; she had bought him time. She had outmaneuvered the new head of the Russo family with nothing but a bluff and a burner phone.
A slow, dark smile spread across Adrian’s bruised face. The wounded lover vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless, calculating Mafia King.
“You’re a genius, Sophia,” Adrian breathed, sitting up, ignoring the pain in his shoulder. “With a three-hour head start, I can position my snipers around their main compound. I can wipe out their leadership before they even realize the armory was a fake. We can win this war.”
He looked at her, his gray eyes blazing with a terrifying, triumphant fire. “Stay with me, Sophia. You see how well we work together? We can rule this city. You’re smarter than all of my advisers combined.”
Sophia looked at the man she had loved.
She saw the excitement in his eyes at the prospect of slaughter. She saw how quickly he abandoned his plea to run away to Europe, instantly seduced back by the promise of power and violence. He wasn't a man trapped by his circumstances; he was a monster who reveled in them.
The last remaining thread of her love for him snapped, cleanly and definitively.
“I don't want to rule a city built on corpses, Adrian,” Sophia said, her voice eerily calm.
She walked over to her tote bag and pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive. She held it up between two fingers.
“This drive contains the decrypted routing numbers for every legitimate shell company your family uses to wash their money,” Sophia stated, looking him dead in the eye. “It contains the names of your bribed customs agents, your offshore accounts, and the falsified tax records I unwittingly helped you create over the last four years.”
Adrian’s triumphant smile collapsed. “Sophia... what are you doing?”
“I am guaranteeing my freedom,” she replied, slipping the drive into her coat pocket. “I am leaving New York. If any of your men try to follow me, if you ever try to contact me, or if anything happens to my gallery, a dead-man’s switch on my server will automatically email these files to the IRS, the FBI, and Interpol. Your entire financial empire will evaporate overnight.”

“You’re blackmailing me?” Adrian whispered, horrified.
“I’m establishing boundaries,” Sophia corrected smoothly. “It seems it’s the only language you truly respect.”
