Chapter 13 - The Betrayal

“You brought a hit squad into a public charity gala?” Adrian asked, his voice shaking with disbelief. “The mayor is out there, Dante! The police commissioner is out there! You’ll bring the FBI down on all of us!”
“I don't care about the FBI,” Dante scoffed, taking another step forward. “I care about respect. You embarrassed my sister. You stole from my father. And you thought you could use this pretty little civilian as a shield.”
Dante looked directly at Sophia, ignoring the gun pointed at his chest.
“Give me the flash drive with the decrypted manifests, Miss Bennett. Do that, and I might make your death quick.”
Sophia didn't cower behind Adrian. She stepped to the side, maintaining a clear line of sight to the Russo enforcer.
“I don't have a flash drive on me,” Sophia lied smoothly, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. “The files are stored on a dead-man’s server. If I don't input a passcode every twelve hours, the manifests automatically email to the FBI field office in Manhattan. You kill me, Dante, and your family burns with Adrian’s.”
Dante paused. His dark eyes narrowed, assessing her. He was a predator, trying to determine if the prey was bluffing.
“She’s lying,” Dante decided, his hand twitching toward the inside of his tuxedo jacket.
“Don't move, Dante!” Adrian roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Before the standoff could escalate, the heavy oak doors of the VIP lounge burst open.
Valentina Russo stood in the doorway, her silver gown glittering in the dim light. In her hand, she held a compact, silenced pistol, aimed directly at her own brother.
“Stand down, Dante,” Valentina commanded, her voice steady and absolute.
Dante slowly turned his head, staring at his sister in profound shock. “Valentina? What are you doing? Put the gun away.”
“You are not starting a war tonight, brother,” Valentina said, stepping fully into the room and closing the door behind her. “If you kill Adrian, the Moretti capos will retaliate. They’ll slaughter our men in the streets. I refuse to let our family bleed out over a bruised ego and a stolen shipment.”
“He betrayed us!” Dante roared, his composure finally cracking. “He slept with this... this commoner while stringing you along! Are you really going to protect him?”
“I’m not protecting him,” Valentina said coldly, her eyes shifting to Adrian. “I am protecting our business. The marriage treaty is still intact. Adrian will marry me, he will transfer the Miami routing accounts back to our control, and he will never see Miss Bennett again. That is the deal.”
Sophia looked at Adrian. He looked entirely broken, the reality of his gilded cage finally closing in on him. He had thought he could play both sides, keeping his power and his love, but the mafia never allowed for compromise.
“I agree to the terms,” Adrian whispered, lowering his gun.
Dante sneered in disgust, spitting on the carpet. “You make me sick, sister.”
“Then look the other way,” Valentina countered. She turned her gun toward Sophia. “The game is over, Sophia. You survived. Now leave, before I let my brother do what he came here to do.”
Sophia looked at Valentina, then at Adrian. The man she had loved for four years was submitting to a forced marriage to save his life, and hers. It was pathetic. It was tragic. And she was completely, finally done with all of it.
She turned on her heel and walked out of the VIP lounge.

But as she stepped into the hallway, the sound of shattered glass and screaming erupted from the main ballroom.
Dante hadn't come alone, and his men weren't waiting for negotiations.
