Chapter 5 - The Illusion of Protection

“I told your assistant to take an early lunch,” Adrian said, his voice quiet but carrying an unmistakable authority that filled the glass-walled office.
Sophia didn't flinch. She slowly closed her laptop, her expression a mask of absolute, terrifying calm.
“You are trespassing, Adrian,” she stated, folding her hands neatly on top of her desk. “I suggest you leave before I call building security.”
Adrian let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Building security won't stop Marcus, and they certainly won't stop me. We need to talk, Sophia.”
He stepped into the office, gesturing for Marcus to wait outside. The large security chief pulled the glass door shut, standing like a gargoyle in the hallway, his arms crossed over his chest.
Adrian walked over to the desk, placing his hands flat on the polished wood, leaning in close. He looked exhausted. The usual sharp, impeccable edge to his appearance was gone. His tie was loosened, and dark circles bruised the skin under his gray eyes.
“Valentina is an arrangement,” Adrian said, his voice urgent, pleading. “Her father, Don Russo, controls the ports in Chicago. My family needed access to those ports to survive a federal crackdown. A marriage treaty was the only way to secure the alliance without starting a bloodbath.”
“A treaty you failed to mention during the four years you slept in my bed,” Sophia countered smoothly, not breaking eye contact.
“I kept you out of it to protect you!” Adrian argued, his voice rising in frustration. “If the Russos knew I had a civilian woman I loved... a woman who meant everything to me... they would have used you as leverage. Valentina’s brother is a psychotic animal. He would have put a bullet in your head just to force my hand.”
Sophia stared at him, letting his words hang in the heavy, silent air of the office.
“You think you protected me?” Sophia asked, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register.
Adrian swallowed hard. “I tried.”
“No, Adrian. You didn't protect me. You hid me.” Sophia stood up, pushing her chair back. “You treated me like a dirty secret while you paraded another woman around to your associates. You built a cage of lies and called it a sanctuary.”
“I love you, Sophia,” Adrian whispered, his eyes filled with a desperate, agonizing truth.
“Love requires respect,” Sophia replied coldly. “And you respected the Russo family’s power far more than you respected my right to make a choice about my own life.”
She walked around the desk, stopping just inches from him.
“Your wedding arrangement is no longer my concern. Get out of my office, Adrian. If you or your men follow me again, I will go to the FBI with the shipping manifests for the Venetian collection.”
Adrian froze. All the blood drained from his face. The pleading lover vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating mafia boss.

“You don't know what you're saying,” Adrian warned, his voice turning to ice.
“I know exactly what I'm saying,” Sophia smiled, a sharp, dangerous expression. “Now, get out.”
