Chapter 12 - The Viper's Den

The color completely drained from Adrian’s face. He looked frantically around the ballroom, his eyes darting to the heavy security details belonging to the Russo family stationed near the exits.
“Sophia,” Adrian hissed, stepping forward and grabbing her elbow, attempting to pull her away from the crowd. “Are you out of your mind? What are you doing here? Dante is in this building.”
“I know,” Sophia replied smoothly, effortlessly pulling her arm out of his grasp. “That’s exactly why I’m here.”
Valentina stepped gracefully to Adrian’s side, playing the role of the oblivious fiancée for the watching crowd. “Adrian, darling, who is this?”
Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle feathered near his ear. He was trapped, utterly paralyzed by the public setting. “She’s... a business associate.”
“I’m the woman who manages the logistics for his specialized imports,” Sophia corrected, her voice dripping with dangerous implications. “Specifically, the shipments from Venice two years ago. I’m sure your father would love to hear all about the routing numbers, Valentina.”
Adrian’s eyes widened in absolute terror. He realized in that split second that Sophia wasn't just a scorned lover seeking revenge; she had looked into the books. She knew about the Miami betrayal.
“Let’s go to the VIP lounge,” Adrian commanded, his voice tight with suppressed panic. “Now.”
Sophia smiled warmly for the cameras flashing near the red carpet. “Lead the way, boss.”
The VIP lounge was a secluded, soundproof room off the main ballroom, guarded by two of Adrian’s men. The moment the heavy oak doors closed behind them, isolating them from the gala, the polite facade vanished entirely.
“How did you get the decryption keys?!” Adrian exploded, pacing the room like a caged animal. “Do you have any idea what you’ve just done? If Dante finds out about Miami, he won't just kill you, Sophia, he’ll slaughter my entire family!”
“Dante already knows, Adrian,” a dark, chilling voice echoed from the shadows of the lounge.
Sophia froze. Adrian spun around, drawing a sleek pistol from his tuxedo jacket in a fraction of a second.
Stepping out from the corner of the dimly lit room was Dante Russo.
He was taller than Adrian, broad-shouldered, with eyes as black and cold as deep space. He didn't carry a visible weapon, but he exuded an aura of violence so potent it made the air in the room feel heavy.
“You really thought you could bypass my father’s ports and sell guns to the Miami cartel without us finding out?” Dante sneered, walking slowly toward the light. “You arrogant fool.”
Dante’s dead eyes shifted from Adrian to Sophia.
“And this must be the brilliant logistician who made it all happen,” Dante murmured, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “You caused my family a lot of trouble, Miss Bennett.”
“She had nothing to do with it!” Adrian yelled, stepping protectively in front of Sophia, his gun aimed squarely at Dante’s chest. “She was blind! I used her company without her knowledge. Let her walk out of here, Dante. This is between you and me.”

Dante chuckled softly, a sound completely devoid of humor.
“It’s far too late for that, Moretti,” Dante said. “My men have already locked down the exits. This gala is a tomb.”
