Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Intruder

|

Three weeks into her new life, Norah had established a peaceful, predictable routine. She handled Leo’s schooling, managed the chaotic household budget with ruthless efficiency, and stayed entirely out of Luca’s dark, syndicate business.

But the past has a dangerous habit of ignoring closed doors.

It was a Tuesday afternoon. Norah was in the grand foyer, helping Leo with his winter coat, when the heavy oak front doors burst open.

Sebastian Crane stormed into the foyer, his face flushed with panicked rage. He had somehow bypassed the outer gate, likely by tailgating a delivery truck.

“You crazy bitch!” Sebastian screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Norah. “You ruined me!”

Leo screamed, hiding behind Norah’s legs. Norah immediately stepped in front of the boy, her maternal instincts flashing into pure, defensive rage.

“Sebastian, get the hell out of this house!” Norah shouted, backing up toward the hallway.

“My firm just lost its biggest shipping contract!” Sebastian yelled, stepping aggressively toward her. “Three years of work, gone overnight! They said a directive came from the top! You told your mobster husband to destroy my life, didn't you?!”

Before Sebastian could take another step, the heavy double doors of Luca’s study flew open.

Luca walked into the foyer, holding a suppressed handgun casually by his side. The sheer, unadulterated violence radiating from his body was suffocating.

“Marco,” Luca said softly, never taking his dead eyes off Sebastian.

Two massive guards materialized from the shadows, grabbing Sebastian by the arms and forcing him violently to his knees on the marble floor.

Sebastian sobbed in absolute terror, looking at the gun in Luca’s hand.

Luca walked slowly over to the kneeling man. He didn't yell. He leaned down, placing the cold steel barrel of the gun gently against Sebastian’s temple.

“You came into my home,” Luca whispered, his voice a demonic rasp. “You frightened my son. And you raised your voice to my wife.”

“Please,” Sebastian begged, crying openly. “I didn't know!”

“If you ever come within fifty miles of Norah again,” Luca promised smoothly, “I will personally bury you under a foundation in New Jersey. Throw him out.”

The guards dragged a screaming, sobbing Sebastian out the door. Luca put the gun away, turned to Norah, and his expression instantly softened as he saw her holding a trembling Leo.

“Are you alright?” Luca asked gently.

Norah nodded, her heart hammering against her ribs. She finally understood exactly what it meant to be protected by a monster.
