Chapter 11 - The Syndicate Gala

|
The Castellano family hosted an annual charity gala at a prestigious midtown hotel, a lavish event designed to camouflage their illicit empire behind a veil of legitimate philanthropy. It was Norah’s first official public appearance as Luca’s wife.
She stood in front of the full-length mirror in her suite, taking a shaky breath. She had refused the overly revealing, flashy gowns the stylist had brought. Instead, Norah chose a custom-tailored, deep burgundy velvet gown that hugged her generous curves flawlessly, leaving her shoulders bare. It was elegant, powerful, and undeniably sexy.
When she walked down the grand staircase, Luca was waiting in the foyer, dressed in a sharp, bespoke tuxedo. He turned around, and for a fraction of a second, the legendary mob boss completely forgot how to breathe.
His eyes swept over her curves, lingering hungrily on the dip of her waist, before meeting her eyes.
“You look breathtaking,” Luca said, his voice a low, gravelly purr that made her stomach flutter.
He offered his arm. She took it, feeling the hard, dangerous muscle beneath his suit jacket.
When they arrived at the gala, the flashing cameras of the press blinded them. The ballroom was packed with the city’s elite, corrupt politicians, and rival syndicate bosses operating under a truce for the night.
Whispers broke out the moment Luca walked in with Norah on his arm. She wasn't the stereotypical, frail trophy wife the underworld expected. She was a woman of substance, walking with her head held high, completely unbothered by their stares.
Luca kept her close, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back. Every time a rival boss looked at her a second too long, Luca’s grip tightened, sending a silent, lethal warning across the room.
“You’re doing perfectly,” Luca murmured in her ear as they navigated the crowd.
“I’m terrified,” Norah whispered back, keeping a flawless smile on her face.

“Don't be,” Luca replied, his lips brushing against her hair. “There isn't a single person in this room I wouldn't kill if they looked at you wrong.”
It was a terrifying, violent promise, but as Norah leaned into his touch, she realized with a shocking clarity that she absolutely loved it.
