Chapter 19 - The Execution of Justice

|

The damp, freezing warehouse on the docks smelled of rust and salt water.

Luca stood in the center of the concrete floor, wearing a dark trench coat over his suit. Dominic Vane was tied to a heavy metal chair, bruised, bleeding, and trembling violently under the glaring overhead lights.

“You sent men to my house, Dominic,” Luca said, his voice echoing in the vast, empty space.

“I was desperate, Luca!” Dominic sobbed, spitting blood. “They were supposed to take her hostage so I could negotiate! I didn't want to hurt the boy!”

Luca’s expression remained carved from stone. “You authorized a strike on my wife. You brought violence to the child you swore to protect.”

Luca slowly pulled his handgun from his shoulder holster. He checked the chamber with a sickening, metallic click.

“She was just a nanny, Luca!” Dominic screamed desperately, trying to find a lifeline that didn't exist. “You bought her to play house! She doesn't belong in our world! You’re going to kill your best friend over a fake wife?”

Luca raised the gun, aiming directly at Dominic’s chest.

“She is not a fake wife,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal, deadly whisper. “She is the queen of this syndicate. And you are out of time.”

Two shots rang out, echoing across the dark waters of the harbor.

When Luca returned to the estate just before dawn, the house was completely silent. He washed the smell of gunpowder and blood off his skin in his private bathroom, staring at his exhausted, scarred reflection in the mirror. He was a monster. He knew exactly what he was.

He walked quietly down the hallway toward the master suite, intending to sleep on the couch.

But when he opened the door, Norah was awake. She was sitting by the large bay window, wearing a soft silk robe, watching the sunrise.

She turned and looked at him. She saw the exhaustion in his eyes. She saw the dark shadow of what he had just done to keep them safe. And she didn't look away in horror.

Norah stood up, walked across the room, and wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest, right over his beating heart.

“It’s over,” Luca whispered, burying his hands in her hair.

“I know,” she replied softly, holding the monster tightly in the dark.
