Chapter 14 - The Analyst's Eye

The incident at the gala fundamentally shifted the dynamic between them. The contract they had signed in the study was still technically in place, but the emotional boundaries were crumbling rapidly.
A week later, Norah was sitting in Luca’s study. He had allowed her access to the household accounts, knowing her background in finance. She was bored with the grocery budget and had started digging into the legitimate front businesses Luca owned—specifically, a string of high-end real estate holding companies.
Luca was sitting on the leather sofa, reading a dossier, occasionally stealing glances at Norah as she furiously typed on her laptop, wearing her reading glasses.
“You’re frowning,” Luca noted, closing his folder. “Did the electric company overcharge us again?”
“No,” Norah said, her eyes rapidly scanning three different spreadsheets. “Your accountants did.”
Luca sat up, his demeanor instantly shifting from relaxed husband to syndicate boss. “Explain.”
Norah turned the laptop around. “I was looking at the reconciliation reports for your Chelsea property acquisitions over the last four quarters. It looks perfectly clean on the surface. But if you cross-reference the shell company payouts with the actual closing costs, there is a recurring discrepancy.”
Luca walked over and leaned over her shoulder, staring at the screen. He smelled like expensive cologne and danger.
“How much is the discrepancy?” he asked, his voice low.
“Seven point4 million dollars,” Norah said plainly.
Luca completely froze. “Are you telling me my own accounting firm is stealing from me?”
“No,” Norah corrected, pushing her glasses up her nose. “The accountants didn't do this. This required executive authorization to bypass the internal audits. Someone inside your syndicate is skimming off the top, routing the money through offshore accounts in the Caymans.”
Luca stared at the numbers. He had the best financial watchdogs in the criminal underworld, and they had missed it. A woman who had been humiliated by her ex-husband over a few thousand dollars had just found a multi-million-dollar leak in his empire.
Luca looked down at her, a fierce, burning pride in his eyes.

“Can you track where the money is going?” Luca asked.
“Give me forty-eight hours and a pot of black coffee,” Norah smirked. “I’ll give you their home address.”
