Chapter 15 - The Charity Restored

|

Three months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago. The ice in the lake had melted, and warm breezes blew down Michigan Avenue.

The Children’s Harbor Foundation held a special press conference at the Art Institute of Chicago to announce the receipt of a record-breaking ten-million-dollar endowment for their new pediatric research facility.

I stood at the podium in front of dozens of cameras and journalists.

"Two months ago," I said into the microphones, "I sat in a cold courtyard at a charity gala feeling as though my life was completely ruined. I learned that evening how fragile public trust can be, and how quickly people disappear when the weather turns bad."

The crowd listened in total silence.

"But I also learned that true character isn't found in grand ballrooms or high-net-worth portfolios," I continued, looking toward the front row, where Maya and Elena sat smiling together. "It is found in the people who look at you when you are at your absolute lowest... and simply ask if you are okay."

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause.

After the press conference ended, I walked out onto the sunlit terrace overlooking the park.

David Vance walked up beside me, holding two cups of coffee. He handed one to me.

"Nolan accepted a plea bargain this morning," David reported softly. "Twelve years in federal prison. No chance of early parole for the first eight."

I took a slow sip of my coffee, watching the clouds float over Lake Michigan.

"Do you feel satisfied?" David asked quietly.

"I feel free, David," I answered honestly. "Nolan took a lot from me, but he forced me to clear out the trash in my life. I’m better off today than I was six months ago."

My personal phone chimed in my pocket.

It was an alert from an unknown number. I opened the message.

It contained a single photo: an image of a sleek black envelope sealed with a red wax stamp bearing an unfamiliar crest—an eagle clutching a broken sword.

Underneath the image was a text message from an untraceable satellite origin:

Nolan Pierce was a minor pawn, Mr. Mercer. You destroyed our acquisition of Mercer Dynamics, but Titan Holdings does not forget. See you in Geneva.
