Chapter 11 - The Unsung Heroine

|

I walked past the coat check, past the grand marble staircase, and back down the quiet service hallway toward the stone courtyard.

Maya and David followed close behind, but I held up a hand. "Give me five minutes alone."

They stopped, nodding understandingly.

I pushed open the heavy wooden doors and stepped back into the glass-roofed courtyard.

The snow was still tapping softly overhead.

Near the frozen stone fountain, Elena was kneeling beside her cleaning cart, quietly wiping down the metal handles with a clean white rag, as if the dramatic storm inside the ballroom had nothing to do with her.

I walked across the wet flagstones and stopped beside her cart.

She looked up, wiping her hands on her apron. "Did you find what you were looking for, Mr. Mercer?"

"We found everything, Elena," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "Nolan Pierce was just led out of the hotel in handcuffs by federal agents."

Elena let out a quiet sigh, nodding slowly. "Good. Men who build their lives on stepping on others always fall eventually."

I pulled off my heavy tuxedo jacket and set it on the clean ledge of the fountain. I looked at this woman who had shown me basic human decency when I was at my absolute lowest point.

"Elena," I said firmly. "What is your last name?"

"Vasquez," she said, frowning slightly in confusion. "Elena Vasquez."

"What did you do before you worked here, Elena?"

She offered a small, sad smile, looking down at her white sneakers. "I was a senior financial auditor for an accounting firm in Mexico City for twelve years. But when my family moved to Chicago three years ago, my degrees didn't transfer cleanly. So... I took what I could find to pay my daughter's college tuition."

I stared at her, absolute awe washing over me.

"A senior auditor," I whispered.

May you like

"Yes, sir."

"Elena," I said, stepping closer. "Starting tomorrow morning, you don't work for the Drake Hotel anymore. Mercer Dynamics needs a Chief Integrity Officer. Someone who knows how to spot corruption—and someone who actually has a heart."
