Chapter 8 - The Settlement Offer

That afternoon, the door to my hospital room swung open.

Daniel finally appeared, carrying a massive, ostentatious bouquet of white lilies. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored navy suit, looking every inch the concerned, wealthy husband. But he wasn't alone. Walking silently behind him was a tall, sharp-featured man carrying a leather briefcase.

"Claire, darling," Daniel cooed, stepping toward the bed. He placed the flowers on the side table, completely ignoring the fact that I couldn't see them.

My parents had stepped out to speak with the doctor, leaving me alone in the room, exactly as we had planned.

"Where have you been?" I asked, keeping my voice small, perfectly playing the role of the frightened, isolated wife.

"I've been dealing with a massive crisis at the hotel," Daniel lied smoothly, pulling a chair close to the bed. "I came as soon as I could. My mother feels terrible. She reacted badly during an emotional moment. But you have to understand, Claire, pressing charges would completely destroy our family."

He didn't ask about my pain. He didn't ask if I would regain my sight.

"Sign this confidentiality agreement," Daniel said softly, the true purpose of his visit finally emerging. "And I’ll take you home. We can put this all behind us."

The lawyer stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal documents onto my hospital blanket.

"What is this?" I asked, brushing my fingers over the heavy paper.

"Standard boilerplate," the lawyer chimed in, his voice slick with false reassurance. "It simply waives your right to pursue civil claims against Mrs. Cross, describes the injury to your eyes as a tragic accident, and transfers your interest in any marital gifts back to Daniel, just to keep the accounting clean."

I almost laughed out loud. The sheer, unadulterated greed was staggering. He wasn't just trying to protect his mother from jail; he was trying to legally strip me of any financial leverage I might have gained in the twenty-four hours we had been married.

"I need time," I whispered, turning my face away.

Daniel leaned closer, his breath hot against my cheek. The facade of the loving husband vanished instantly.

"You don’t have options, Claire," he hissed, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "Your little museum salary won’t even cover the co-pays for the specialists you're going to need. Sign the paper, or I freeze our joint accounts today."
