Chapter 12 - The Default

Silence swallowed the room completely. It was a thick, suffocating silence, the kind that only exists when arrogant people realize their entire worldview has just been shattered.

Vivian lowered her designer sunglasses, staring at me with wide, terrified eyes. She looked at my father, then back to me.

"She said..." Vivian whispered, her voice trembling violently. "She said you were retired public school teachers."

"My parents taught me many valuable things, Vivian," I replied, leaning forward and resting my hands flat on the polished table. "But the most important lesson they taught me is what happens when arrogance mistakes discretion for weakness."

Malcolm Cross looked down at the massive loan file. His hands began to shake.

"What is this, Robert?" Malcolm demanded, though the bluster was completely gone from his voice.

"That is the formal notice of acceleration," my father stated coldly. "Hartwell Capital is officially enforcing the default clauses on every single loan the Cross Meridian Hotel Group holds. You violated the financial covenants three months ago. The waivers I signed are hereby revoked."

Malcolm’s face turned gray. "You can't do this. We have a refinancing deal pending with a European bank! If you pull the loans now, the deal collapses!"

"The deal is already dead," my father corrected him. "I sent a copy of the police report regarding your wife and son's felony arrests to the European underwriters this morning. They pulled out an hour ago."

"Your personal guarantees are due immediately, Malcolm," I added, my voice devoid of any sympathy. "A court-appointed receiver will take full control of your hotels, your corporate accounts, and your liquid assets by sunset tonight."

Daniel lunged forward, slamming his hands on the table, directing his fury entirely at me.

"You can’t do this!" Daniel screamed, his face red with rage. "You can’t destroy our entire family over one mistake!"
