Chapter 7 - The Metadata

The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with sickening force. The whirlwind romance, the sudden urgency to get married, the insistence on keeping the wedding small and entirely controlled by his family. It wasn't passion. It was a calculated corporate strategy.

"Are you sure?" I asked, desperation clinging to my words. I needed to know the depth of the betrayal.

"We are positive," my mother confirmed. "Last night, while you were sleeping, I ran a metadata extraction on the financial documents Daniel voluntarily shared with us during the prenuptial process. We wanted to see his digital footprint."

"And?"

"And," she continued grimly, "he searched your father’s full legal name, his corporate affiliations, and the exact corporate structure of Hartwell Capital three weeks before he proposed to you in Paris."

I felt physically ill. The romantic dinner by the Seine, the tears in his eyes when he presented the ring—it was all a meticulously acted performance. He hadn't fallen in love with a museum archivist. He had discovered he was dating the daughter of the man who held the executioner's axe over his family's empire.

The marriage had not been love spoiled by cruelty. It had been a hostile corporate takeover disguised as a wedding.

"They thought they were buying themselves an insurance policy," my father said, his voice vibrating with barely contained fury. "They thought that by marrying you, I would simply forgive their debts to avoid embarrassing my daughter."

"And when I didn't immediately shower them with money on the first morning," I realized aloud, "Vivian snapped."

"Exactly," my mother said.

I took a deep, shuddering breath. The girl who had loved Daniel Cross died in that marble foyer. The woman who remained in this hospital bed felt nothing but a cold, calculating desire for total annihilation.

"Let's burn them down," I said.
