Chapter 4 - The Strategy

"Did she do this deliberately, Claire?" my mother asked, her voice dropping to a low, clinical register that she reserved for hostile witnesses. She leaned close to my ear, ensuring no one else could hear.

"Yes," I whispered, the memory of Vivian's cruel smile burning brighter than the chemicals.

"And did Daniel see?"

I gripped my father's hand tighter. "He held me still. He told me I was overreacting."

The silence that followed was heavy and lethal. I couldn't see my father's face, but I felt the sudden, terrifying rigidity of his posture.

My mother gently placed her hand over mine.

"Then we do this cleanly, Claire," she instructed, her voice steady and absolute. "No threats. No dramatic scenes. We do not engage in a shouting match. We let them keep talking. We let them dig the hole as deep as they possibly can."

Behind my bandages, the tears finally stopped flowing. The initial shock and panic were receding, replaced by a cold, hard knot of pure resolve forming in my stomach.

"There's something else," I rasped, my voice gaining strength.

"What is it, sweetheart?" my father asked.

"The doorbell," I whispered. "Vivian had a habit of showing up at my apartment unannounced and letting herself in. So, two months ago, I installed a high-end security doorbell on their mansion's front door under the guise of a wedding gift. It’s hardwired. And it uploads every second of high-definition video and audio to a private, encrypted cloud account I control."

My mother let out a slow, satisfied breath. It was the sound of a prosecutor who had just been handed the murder weapon.

"Get the footage," I told them. "And whatever you do, do not tell them who you really are yet. Let them think they hold all the cards."

"We will," my mother promised, her tone colder than ice. "They are going to wish they had never heard your name."
