Chapter 5 - THE GLASS FORTRESS|

Elena stood in front of her small bathroom mirror, running her hands down the smooth silk of the emerald dress.
She should have thrown it back in the courier's face. She should have called in sick to both jobs and caught a bus out of the state.
Instead, pride and an undeniable, terrifying curiosity had won.
The dress fit her as if it had been molded directly onto her body. The rich green fabric brought out the golden flecks in her hazel eyes and complemented her pale skin.
At precisely 7:00 PM, a heavy knock sounded at her door.
The same security guard from the night before stood in the hall. "Mr. Russo is waiting, Miss Ellis."
The Maybach didn't stop in downtown Manhattan. It crossed the bridge, climbing into the secluded hills of Alura—an exclusive enclave where real estate was owned by old money and shadowy figures.
They passed through massive wrought-iron gates guarded by armed men, winding up a paved driveway toward a modern structure of dark stone and floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the entire illuminated valley.
"Is this your house?" Elena asked as the driver opened her door.
"One of them," Adrien’s voice came from the grand double entrance.
He stood under the exterior lights, wearing a black turtleneck and tailored trousers. Without the suit armor, he looked even more lethal—broad, lean, and intensely focused.
He took her hand, his thumb tracing her wrist as he led her inside.
The estate was breathtaking. Soaring ceilings, warm hardwood floors, and original artwork that belonged in national galleries. But there were no family photos. No warm, lived-in clutter.
It was a fortress designed for a king who trusted no one.
"Why am I here, Adrien?" Elena asked, stopping in the middle of the vast living room.
Adrien walked over to a wet bar, pouring two fingers of amber bourbon into a crystal tumbler.
"Do you know what I see when I look out at that city, Elena?" he asked softly, gesturing toward the twinkling lights below. "A sea of people pretending. Pretending they are safe. Pretending they are free."
He turned around, his silver eyes locking onto hers.
"But you don't pretend. You carry your burdens right on your face."
Elena backed away a step. "You don't know me."
"I know more than you think," he said, taking a slow sip. "I know about Tommy."

Elena’s heart stopped. The room seemed to tilt.
"What did you say?" she whispered.
