CHAPTER 8 — THE NEW GUARDIAN
The next two weeks were a blur of heightened vigilance. I drove Chloe to school every day, waited until she walked through the front doors, and arrived twenty minutes early for pickup. I couldn't sleep. Every creak in our apartment building sounded like an intruder.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, my worst nightmare manifested.
Traffic was backed up due to a minor accident, making me fifteen minutes late for school pickup. Panic clawed at my throat as I finally swerved into the school's drop-off zone. The sidewalk was nearly empty.
I jumped out of the car, slamming the door, and ran toward the main entrance. Through the heavy glass doors, I saw Chloe. She was sitting on a bench in the lobby, but she wasn't alone.
A woman was sitting next to her, speaking intensely, her hand resting on Chloe's shoulder.
It was Rachel.
Her hair was unkempt, her expensive designer clothes replaced by a faded jacket. She looked desperate, her eyes wide as she held a teddy bear out toward Chloe. Chloe was crying, her tiny body trembling as she pressed herself against the wall, trying to get away.
"Get away from her!" I roared, bursting through the doors.
Before I could reach them, another figure stepped between Rachel and Chloe. It was Evelyn. With a fierce authority, Evelyn grabbed Rachel’s wrist, forcing her hand away from my daughter.
"That is enough, Rachel! Leave right now before the security I called gets here!" Evelyn yelled.
Rachel snapped her head around, her eyes wild with betrayal. "You're taking his side? He ruined my life! She ruined my life!" Rachel pointed a shaking finger at Chloe. "If it weren't for that brat, I would be a wife! I would have a family!"
"You did this to yourself!" Evelyn shouted back, pushing Rachel toward the exit just as two school security guards rushed into the lobby. They immediately grabbed Rachel by the arms, pulling her away as she screamed obscenities, her gaze locked onto Chloe until the doors slammed shut.
The lobby fell into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by Chloe’s soft, ragged sobs.
I rushed forward, collapsing to my knees, and pulled Chloe into my arms. She buried her face in my neck, shaking violently. "I'm sorry, Daddy. I tried to tell her to go away," she wept.
"It's okay, baby. You did nothing wrong. I'm here. I've got you," I whispered, blinking back my own tears of rage and guilt. I had failed to protect her today.
I looked up to see Evelyn standing a few feet away. Her hands were shaking, and a bright red scratch marked her cheek from the scuffle with her sister. Despite my previous distrust, there was no denying what had just happened. She had protected my daughter.
"Thank you," I said, the words heavy and genuine.

Evelyn offered a weak, trembling smile, wiping a tear from her own eye. "I told you, Marcus. I won't let them hurt her again. Let me help you file the restraining order. I'll testify."
As the rain poured outside, a strange, complicated alliance was born in that school lobby.
