CHAPTER 11 — FROM THE ASHES
The aftermath of the fire brought a brutal, final closure. Rachel was charged with aggravated arson, attempted murder, and violation of a restraining order. Given her mental state and the overwhelming evidence, she was sentenced to a high-security psychiatric facility indefinitely, stripped of any future parole possibilities. Her parents, terrified of the public scandal, fled the country, completely abandoning both Rachel and Evelyn.
Our apartment was ruined, but our lives were intact.
For the next two months, Evelyn offered us her spacious apartment while we looked for a new home. What started as a temporary arrangement quickly blossomed into something beautiful and seamless.
We became a team.
Evelyn and I would cook dinner together while Chloe did her homework at the kitchen island. We healed each other. Evelyn showed Chloe that not all adults from her past were monsters, and Chloe showed Evelyn what it felt like to be loved unconditionally by a child.
One evening, after Chloe had gone to bed, Evelyn and I stood on the balcony, looking out over the city lights. The air was crisp, signaling the arrival of a new winter.
"I found a new house today," I said softly, leaning against the railing. "It’s a brownstone near the park. It has a huge backyard for Chloe to play in."
Evelyn’s smile was beautiful, but a trace of sadness lingered in her eyes. "That's amazing, Marcus. You and Chloe deserve a fresh start. I'll help you guys pack up this weekend."
I turned to face her, taking both of her hands in mine. Her hands were no longer shaking; they were steady and warm.
"I don't think you understand, Evelyn," I said, my voice rich with emotion. "When I say I found a new house, I mean I found a house for us. I don't want to move in there without you. Chloe doesn't want to move in there without you."
Evelyn gasped softly, her eyes welling with tears. "Marcus... are you sure? After everything my family did to you..."
"Your family didn't save my daughter. You did," I said gently, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You loved us when we were broken. You fought for us. I love you, Evelyn. I want to build a life with you. If you'll have us."
"Yes," she whispered, throwing her arms around my neck. "A thousand times, yes."
From the bedroom doorway, a small voice piped up. "Does this mean Miss Evelyn is staying forever?"
May you like
We turned to see Chloe standing there, rubbing her eyes, a massive smile spreading across her face. Evelyn opened her arms, and Chloe ran forward, jumping into them.
The ashes of our past were gone. We were finally building something unbreakable.
