CHAPTER 4 — THE PERSON WHO SPOKE LAST

An elderly woman slowly stood from the front row.

It was Rachel's grandmother, Eleanor.

She walked toward us using her cane.

Everyone watched.

She stopped in front of Chloe.

Then smiled gently.

"What did you write for your daddy?"

Chloe shyly handed her the letter.

Eleanor read every word.

By the time she finished, tears filled her eyes.

She folded the paper carefully.

Then turned toward Rachel.

"When your grandfather married me..."

Her voice remained calm.

"He promised my little boy that becoming his husband would never stop him from becoming his father."

She paused.

"And he kept that promise until the day he died."

She handed the letter back to Chloe.

"Love never asks a child to disappear."
