CHAPTER 6 — TWO YEARS LATER
Two years later...
Life looked very different.
The wedding venue had become only a memory.
Rachel eventually sent several letters apologizing.
I wished her peace.
But I never answered.
Some chapters are meant to end.
Chloe grew stronger every year.
She joined the school choir.
Learned to ride a bicycle.
Made friends.
One spring afternoon she handed me another folded piece of paper.
I smiled.
"Another letter?"
She nodded.
"No."
"It's a new promise."
I opened it.
In careful handwriting it read:
Dear Daddy,
Thank you for choosing me that day.
I know it was supposed to be your wedding.
But you made me feel like I was the most important person in the room.
I hope one day, if you ever marry again, she'll love both of us.
Because that's what a family does.
Love,
Chloe
I looked at my daughter.
She wasn't the frightened little girl sitting on a bathroom floor anymore.
She was confident.
Kind.
Safe.
I pulled her into a hug.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"You were never going to ruin my wedding."
She smiled.
"What ruined it?"
I laughed softly.
"The truth."
We walked home hand in hand beneath the evening sky.
Not as two people who had lost something.
But as a father and daughter who had chosen each other over everything else.
Because weddings last a day.
But the promise a parent makes to protect a child...
May you like
Lasts a lifetime.
