Chapter 23 - The Name Above the DoorA year after the Varela victory, Sofia’s reputation in the capital was legendary. Corporate firms offered her blank checks to join their defense teams, but she turned down every single one.

Instead, she bought a building in a working-class neighborhood.

I took the bus down for the grand opening. When I arrived, a small crowd had gathered on the sidewalk. Sofia was standing by the front door, holding a pair of giant scissors and a bright red ribbon.

When she saw me, her face lit up. She ran over and pulled me to the front of the crowd.

"I couldn't do this without you, Papa," she said.

We looked up at the newly painted sign above the glass doors.

The Elena Ramirez Center for Justice & Human Rights.

I stared at the name. My wife's name. It was no longer just a name carved into a marble headstone in a quiet cemetery. It was a beacon. It was a promise to every terrified, vulnerable person who walked through those doors that they would be protected.

Sofia smiled, handed me one side of the scissors, and together, we cut the ribbon.
