Chapter 21 - The Courtroom EchoesThe courtroom was packed. The press had picked up the story: the young, fierce underdog going up against the Goliath of the construction industry.

I sat in the back row of the public gallery, watching my daughter work.

Arturo Varela was on the witness stand. He wore a custom Italian suit and a patronizing smirk, answering Sofia’s questions with feigned sympathy and practiced lies.

"Mr. Varela," Sofia said, pacing slowly in front of the stand. "You claim that your company adheres to the highest safety standards, and that the collapse was a tragic anomaly caused by the workers themselves."

"That is correct, Ms. Ramirez," Varela smiled. "We spare no expense on safety."

Sofia stopped. She walked to her desk and picked up a single piece of paper.

"Then can you explain this?" she asked, handing the document to the bailiff to present to the witness.

Varela looked at the paper. His smirk faltered.

"This is an internal requisition form, signed by you, dated three weeks before the collapse," Sofia's voice rang out, cold and sharp as a blade. "It authorizes the cancellation of the high-grade steel supports from your primary vendor, replacing them with a cheaper, uncertified alloy from a shell company. A shell company that, according to these tax records, is owned by your brother-in-law."

The courtroom erupted into whispers. The defense attorneys frantically began objecting, but the judge slammed his gavel.

"You didn't spare no expense, Mr. Varela," Sofia stepped closer to the stand, her eyes burning with righteous fury. "You spared fifty thousand dollars. And it cost three men their lives. You traded their blood for your profit."

Varela looked trapped, his arrogance completely shattered. I sat in the gallery, my chest swelling. She wasn't just a lawyer. She was an absolute force of nature.
