Chapter 22 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for less than four hours.

When the foreperson read the verdict—Guilty of Gross Criminal Negligence and Wrongful Death—the courtroom exploded. The families of the deceased workers broke down into heavy, weeping sobs.
The judge ordered Grupo Varela to pay an unprecedented settlement to the families, and Arturo Varela was remanded into custody pending criminal charges.
Sofia stood at the plaintiff's table. A woman whose husband had died in the collapse approached her, her hands trembling. The woman fell to her knees, taking Sofia’s hands and kissing them.
"Thank you," the woman cried. "Thank you for seeing us."
Sofia knelt down, tears streaming down her own face, and hugged the widow tightly.
"You were never invisible," Sofia whispered. "Never."
