Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of Betrayal

|

Evan didn't sit. He took a step toward me, his hands raised in a pleading gesture.

“Claire, you have to listen to me,” Evan stammered, tears welling in his eyes. “My parents... they lost control! They pressured me! I never wanted any of this to happen to you!”

I looked up at his trembling face, my expression as cold and smooth as carved ice.

“That word sounded very different,” I said softly, “when I was lying on the floor of my foyer while you stood on my hand.”

Evan flinched as if I had struck him across the face. “I was scared, Claire! I panicked! I didn't know how to stop them!”

“You watched,” I reminded him, my voice steady, echoing clearly off the glass walls. “You watched your mother hit me with a wooden cane. You watched your father kick my knee until the bone snapped. And then you looked down at me and smiled.”

“Claire, please!” Diane interjected from the end of the table, leaning forward with her hands clasped together in prayer. “Families make mistakes! We were under so much stress with the business! We can fix this together! We’re family!”

I turned my gaze slowly toward my mother-in-law.

“A mistake, Diane, is forgetting a family birthday or overcooking a holiday dinner,” I said sharply. “Breaking a woman’s leg in two places because she caught you stealing millions of dollars isn't a mistake. It is felony evidence.”

Richard slammed his heavy palm against the conference table, making the glasses of water jump.

“You think you can just destroy us, girl?” Richard roared, his face flushing crimson. “We made this company! Evan is the face of Mercer Logistics! Without him, this place is nothing!”

James Holloway leaned forward, pulling three crisp, white legal documents from his briefcase and sliding them across the smooth wood until they rested directly in front of Richard and his defense team.

“I don't think anything, Mr. Mercer,” I said calmly. “I’ve already acted.”
