Chapter 7 - The Elevator Opens

|
The room went deathly silent.
The air seemed to get sucked right out of the corridor.
Diane’s grip on the bouquet loosened. The yellow lilies slipped from her manicured fingers, crashing onto the cold linoleum floor in a messy heap of crushed petals and scattered leaves.
Richard’s face turned from flushed red to a sick, chalky gray.
Evan took a step back, his throat working as he swallowed hard. “Investigators? What... what investigators?”
“Federal agents from the Special Investigations Division,” Dr. Harrison replied smoothly. “And I believe they’ve grown tired of waiting in the lobby.”
Right on cue, the heavy silver elevator doors at the end of the quiet corridor chimed open.
Two men in tailored dark suits stepped out onto the floor. Hanging from their breast pockets were silver federal credentials.
Walking between them, looking utterly calm and carrying a sealed black leather accordion file, was James Holloway.
Richard stumbled backward until his shoulders hit the wall behind the empty hospital bed. Diane let out a faint, strangled gasp, clutching her husband’s arm.
James stopped three feet from the group, his eyes sweeping over Evan, Richard, and Diane with ruthless detachment.
“Mr. Evan Mercer,” James began, his voice echoing cleanly in the quiet hallway. “Mr. Richard Mercer. Mrs. Diane Mercer.”
Evan tried to recover his composure, straightening his tie with shaking fingers. “James? What is the meaning of this joke? Did Claire hire you to throw a temper tantrum?”
James didn't answer him directly. He simply unclasped the leather file folder and pulled out a stack of federal subpoenas, court orders, and evidence briefs.
“I am here to serve you with formal notice of an emergency corporate freeze order,” James said. “And these two gentlemen are Special Agents Miller and Vance.”
Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a small notebook from his coat. “Richard Mercer, we have executed search warrants at your residential property and three registered business addresses in connection with an ongoing investigation into wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement exceeding three million dollars.”
Evan’s eyes darted frantically between the agents and James. “Wait! No! That’s a mistake! Any financial discrepancies are internal company matters!”
“They were internal company matters,” James corrected, leaning forward slightly, “until you decided to commit aggravated assault and extortion against a forty-percent equity partner to cover up those crimes.”
Diane collapsed heavily into the vinyl armchair in the corner of the room, her hands covering her mouth as she began to sob hysterically.

Richard couldn't speak. He just stared at James with wide, terrified eyes.
And Evan—arrogant, charming, invincible Evan—finally realized that the woman he had watched lying broken and bleeding on his marble floor had never been helpless at all.
