Chapter 14 - The Quiet Shore

|
One year after the night my leg broke, I stood on a quiet, windswept beach along the northern coast of California.
The cool Pacific breeze carried the salty tang of the ocean, rustling the fabric of my light linen coat. The sky was painted in soft shades of pink, orange, and deep violet as the sun began its slow descent into the horizon.
I rolled up the cuff of my trousers and looked down at my left leg.
Just beneath my knee, running down toward my ankle, was a thin, silvery surgical scar—a permanent reminder of the night my old life ended.
I ran my fingers over the pale skin.
There was no pain left. The bone had knitted back together stronger than it had been before. The scar no longer represented victimhood or terror. It was a medal of honor—a mark of the night I had chosen truth over silence, freedom over fear.
My phone chimed softly once in my coat pocket.
I pulled it out and looked at the screen. It was a message from James Holloway:
The final divorce decree has been officially signed and entered into the state registry today, Claire. You are legally, financially, and completely free.
Attached to the text was a PDF copy of the court document stamped FINAL.
I looked at the text for a long moment, feeling a warm, deep sense of peace settle over my chest like a quiet blanket.

I didn't cry. I didn't cheer.
I simply pressed my thumb against Evan’s contact card on my phone, selected 'Delete Contact,' and watched his name disappear from my life forever.
